Since its release in 2017, Bluetooth® Mesh networking has enabled the creation of large-scale device networks and helped address some of the reliability and scalability challenges in commercial and industrial environments. The technology is quickly becoming an integral part of the smart buildings and smart cities of tomorrow, and we’ve seen Bluetooth Mesh product qualifications double every six months since its release, reaching 243 qualified Bluetooth Mesh products in August 2019. If this trend continues, we can expect to see nearly 500 qualified Bluetooth Mesh products in early 2020.
Extending the capabilities of Bluetooth Low Energy, Bluetooth Mesh networks support reliable, scalable, secure solutions for a wide range of commercial and industrial IoT applications for control, monitoring, and automation where tens, hundreds, or thousands of devices need to reliably and securely communicate with one another.
Simplifying Multi-Vendor Mesh and Sensor Networks
In his presentation on Simplifying Multi-Vendor Mesh and Sensor Networks, STMicroelectronics RF Sensor and Application Manager Francesco Doddo looks at the basics, benefits, and potential of the technology. Doddo says that by using a managed flood message relay architecture, the inherent multipath of Bluetooth Mesh networking, Bluetooth® Mesh ensures simple deployment, efficient management, and reliable message delivery.
Doddo goes on to highlight that through the implementation of obfuscation, double key encryption, and the ability to easily add or remove nodes, Bluetooth Mesh delivers government-grade, multi-level security that is critical to commercial and industrial environments. Real-world deployments are already seeing significant benefits from Bluetooth Mesh, whether its expanded sensor networks, increased efficiency, lower operational costs, or reduced equipment downtime.
