Recently, the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV), the oldest art museum in Australia, upgraded their facilities with Bluetooth® Location Services to enhance the experience of visitors from around the world.

Founded in 1861, NGV is the country’s largest and most visited art museum, welcoming more than 2.8 million visitors per year. Its collection contains approximately 70,000 works of art spanning thousands of years, making it a challenge to see everything the NGV has to offer in a single visit.

Thankfully, the NGV’s network of Eddystone beacons, powered by Bluetooth technology, helps guests find their way around the museum quicker and easier via the NGV smartphone app. Strategically deployed in the ceiling of the gallery on each floor, these proximity beacons support a range of indoor positioning and location services, including point-of-interest information and indoor navigation solutions.

How It Works

Accessing NGV’s Bluetooth® enabled beacon network is simple and straightforward.

Download the NGV app before visiting the museum, and turn on Bluetooth. The NGV app requires Bluetooth to be turned on to help visitors navigate the gallery and find content about the surrounding artwork.

Open the NGV app and download the location data.

Keep an eye on the location bar for updates on positioning in the gallery. Click to explore rooms, find nearby artworks, and discover related content. Click on Map, to determine your current location (including current floor). Visitors, when checking, can also find their next point of interest in the yellow spot.

Wayfinding and Point-of-Interest Solutions

Bluetooth® Location Services are quickly gaining traction as a premier indoor navigation solution. The 2018 Bluetooth Market Update forecasts more than 5 billion in annual Bluetooth device shipments worldwide by 2022 and predicts 10x growth in annual shipments of Bluetooth Location Services devices during that same period.

NGV’s implementation of Bluetooth Location Services is just one example on how facilities are using Bluetooth to create a better experience for their visitors and staff. There are a number of case studies available that showcase just how valuable location services are to optimizing processes, enhancing the guest experience, and ensuring a greater smart building ROI.
