Bluetooth Technology Turns "10"

Bluetooth technology turned 10-years-old in 2008. It is still a youngster in terms of age, but is used the world over.

Bluetooth is one of the fastest growing brands ever – with nearly 2 billion devices using the short range wireless standard.

Bluetooth technology is in mobile phones, printers, cars, TVs and many of those popular wireless gaming controllers.

To mark the 10th birthday of Bluetooth technology, members of the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) can submit short stories. We want to hear about your best Bluetooth moments.

In the fourth installment of the Best Bluetooth Moments stories, Sensory Inc. CEO Todd Mozer discusses the intersection of Bluetooth and speech technologies and how his company is taking hands-free to a new level with voice controlled Bluetooth headsets - perfect timing for all the new Bluetooth users complying with recent hands-free legislation.

Bluetooth Technology Speaks to Me

by Todd Mozer, CEO, Sensory Inc.

In mid-2006, in Sensory’s twelfth year of developing speech recognition and synthesis solutions, I became much more aware of the prevalence of Bluetooth headsets.  I started seeing them everywhere – the grocery store, the coffee shop, driving down the road.  As did millions of consumers, I recognized the huge convenience factor for multi-tasking individuals with bags, children, beverages or steering wheels (or all of the above) in their hands as they are trying to answer and conduct conversations over their mobile phones.  Once they had the headset on their ears and the call was in progress, these people were able to relax a notch and talk while also tending to whatever was physically in front of them.  But that hectic moment of getting the headset situated and the call initiated gave me an idea: speech technology could make this already convenient experience that much simpler and truly hands-free.
