BLUETOOTH SIG HOSTS DEVELOPERS’ PREVIEW OF UNIVERSAL LOW ENERGY SPECIFICATION
Bluetooth SIG
Tokyo, Japan - 30 March 2009 – The Bluetooth SIG will host a Developers’ Preview of the upcoming 1.0 Bluetooth low energy specification in conjunction with the association’s Annual Member All Hands Meeting in Tokyo, Japan, on 20 April 2009.

“There is great interest in creating watches and fitness products that can exchange and display personal information. Bluetooth low energy technology will expand this market, setting the stage for a healthy and fit future,” says Michael Foley, Ph.D., executive director of the Bluetooth SIG. “The new specification will enable the development of new applications for Bluetooth wireless technology in the sports and fitness industries.”

The Developers’ Preview will provide technologists the opportunity to learn about possibilities for enhancing and expanding the use of mobile phones and computers with very low power, sensor-type devices such as sports watches that will connect easily to sensors located on clothing or shoes and gather fitness performance data that can be sent wirelessly to a mobile phone or PC for monitoring, storage, and or additional processing.

The Bluetooth low energy specification will expand adoption of Bluetooth technology in new industries such as sports, fitness and create growth opportunities for the watch industry.  The Developers’ Preview will help developers within these industry segments to kick start their work and get ready for the anticipated approval of the specification later this year. “As a new universal standard for short range, low energy applications, this specification will revolutionize the sports and fitness markets and Polar is excited by all the new possibilities that it will enable,” says Marco Suvilaakso, executive director, Sports Business Area, Polar Electro Oy.

The Developers’ Preview is the first in a series of initiatives highlighting the upcoming launch of the Bluetooth low energy specification.  The schedule includes the Bluetooth Innovation World Cup, a competition designed to foster innovation and create excitement about Bluetooth low energy technology.  The competition has a strong commitment from the industry and Bluetooth SIG has teamed up with the leading sporting goods trade show, ispo, the World Federation of the Sporting Goods Industry (WFSGI) and Nordic Semiconductor. “This will give product designers the creative freedom to fully apply their wireless imaginations in new and innovative ways, and is something we are keen to recognize,” says Alf Helge Omre, Business Development Manager, Nordic Semiconductor.

About Bluetooth® Wireless Technology
Bluetooth wireless technology is the global short-range wireless standard for personal connectivity of a broad range of electronic devices. The technology continues to evolve, building on its inherent strengths – small-form factor radio, low power, low cost, built-in security, robustness, ease-of-use, and ad hoc networking abilities. More than nine new Bluetooth enabled products are qualified every working day and 18 million Bluetooth units are shipping per week. There are over two billion Bluetooth devices in the marketplace and that number climbs daily, making it the only proven wireless choice for developers, product manufacturers, and consumers worldwide.
