BLUETOOTH SIG ANNOUNCES BLUETOOTH® INNOVATION WORLD CUP
01-Jun-2009
Bluetooth SIG
Bellevue, Washington, June 1, 2009 - The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) is pleased to announce the start of the world’s first Bluetooth Innovation World Cup. The trade organization is calling on developers and students to submit their concepts primarily for sports, fitness and health care products that leverage the unique capabilities of the coming Bluetooth low energy wireless technology specification for consideration.
Bluetooth low energy wireless technology offers an enormous potential for the development of innovative sports, fitness and sports-related health care solutions. The specification, which is anticipated to be ratified later this year, will offer a global standard for obtaining and measuring real-time performance data. Mobile phones, which are set to become the pocket-sized information hub of the future, will be used to compile and process the data from devices such as heart-rate monitors, movement sensors, and even blood-sugar monitors with built-in pedometers. Through the Bluetooth Innovation World Cup, the Bluetooth SIG is fostering the imagination and creativity of developers seeking to create innovative new devices and to enhance existing Bluetooth applications in many areas such as the sports, fitness and health care markets.
“By monitoring body motion and responses, sensors communicating efficiently over a Bluetooth low energy network to an Internet connected phone provide the data to enable countless applications for fitness enhancement and sports performance monitoring and training, as well as advanced gaming,” said Demetre Kondylis, vice president and general manager of Freescale’s Sensor and Actuator Solutions Division. “The Bluetooth Innovation World Cup is a great initiative for exploring these ideas and to uncover concepts that haven’t even been considered.”
“The Bluetooth brand has the trust of customers and use of the Bluetooth low energy technology will put in substantial added value to consumer products through standardization and low battery consumption,” said Michael Foley, executive Director Bluetooth SIG.
Innovators from all over the world are invited to submit their concepts through the online database. Submissions will be accepted from June 1 through October 31, 2009. Concepts will be evaluated based on criteria available at the competition web site. The four finalists will be announced January 2010 and showcased as part of the Wearable Technologies show at ispo Winter in February 2010 in Munich, Germany. The Innovator of the Year will receive a prize of 5,000 Euro and development support to bring his product idea to market.
The first Bluetooth Innovation World Cup is sponsored by Freescale Semiconductor (Technology partner), Brunel, Nokia, Nordic Semiconductors, ST Microelectronics, and Texas Instruments with support by the world’s leading sporting goods trade show, ispo and the World Federation of Sporting Goods Industry (WFSGI).

About Bluetooth® Wireless Technology Bluetooth wireless technology is the global short-range wireless standard for personal connectivity of a broad range of electronic devices. The technology continues to evolve, building on its inherent strengths – small-form factor radio, low power, low cost, built-in security, robustness, ease-of-use, and ad hoc networking abilities. More than nine new Bluetooth enabled products are qualified every working day and 18 million Bluetooth units are shipping per week. There are over two billion Bluetooth devices in the marketplace and that number climbs daily, making it the only proven wireless choice for developers, product manufacturers, and consumers worldwide.
