BLUETOOTH HEALTH & FITNESS SALES TOP 20 MILLION
Bluetooth SIG
Bluetooth technology outsells other wireless technologies by a factor of ten…

Bellevue, WA – 21 May, 2009 - Sales of over 20 million Bluetooth enabled health and fitness devices from hundreds of different manufacturers have established Bluetooth technology as the de facto solution for health and fitness devices. Whilst the industry debate about which wireless technology is best for personal medical devices continues, Bluetooth technology has been quietly getting on with the job.  Most owners of these devices probably don’t even know it’s there, but whether it’s a defibrillator, weight scale, heart rate belt, glucose meter or a Wii Fit Balance Board, personal medical device manufacturers have been unanimous in choosing Bluetooth technology solutions for device connectivity.

While Bluetooth technology has already seen great success in the health and fitness vertical, that success is about to downshift again as the personal medical device industry begins to take off, moving shipments into the hundreds of millions.  Last year, the Continua Health Alliance chose Bluetooth technology as its wireless standard for medical device interoperability.  The first Bluetooth technology based, Continua compliant products have just started appearing.  The launch of the new Bluetooth low energy specification later this year will enable development of a new, even larger generation of devices that connect to mobile phones.  This new specification is anticipated to increase the size of this market with billions of new devices.

“Having over 20 million products already shipped is a clear indication of the success of Bluetooth technology in the medical industry” stated Michael Foley, executive Director Bluetooth SIG. “Over time, medical devices could rival the significant volume of mobile phones utilizing Bluetooth technology. I expect to see many creative new applications entered into the Innovation World Cup, which is beginning next month.”

About Bluetooth® Wireless Technology
Bluetooth wireless technology is the global short-range wireless standard for personal connectivity of a broad range of electronic devices. The technology continues to evolve, building on its inherent strengths – small-form factor radio, low power, low cost, built-in security, robustness, ease-of-use, and ad hoc networking abilities. More than nine new Bluetooth enabled products are qualified every working day and 18 million Bluetooth units are shipping per week. There are over two billion Bluetooth devices in the marketplace and that number climbs daily, making it the only proven wireless choice for developers, product manufacturers, and consumers worldwide.
